Gift Cards Cannot Expire Any Earlier than 5 Years
Although open loop gift cards such as Visa gift cards, Mastercard® gift cards and so forth still have published expiration dates, I haven’t seen a store or restaurant gift card (closed loop) with an expiration date on it for a few years.
Why do gift vouchers expire?
So companies that issue gift cards find ways to make them expire. When a gift card loses value to a “service charge”, the company isn’t actually performing a service for you; when a card loses value to a “maintenance fee”, there isn’t any actual maintenance being done on it.
What can I do with expired gift cards?
In states with such laws, funds on expired gift cards no longer have to be turned over as unclaimed property. If the state permits expiration and the date is past, talk to the retailer first.

Generally, you can’t, but there are workarounds. You can go to the store where you got the gift card for. Purchase an item that would fulfill the gift card, and then, later, return the item for a refund. They may want to put the refund back on a card, but request cash.
